Meditation Timer App Reviews

Good, but needs improvement

In general, I really like this app. It would be helpful if you could reset the timer using a single gesture rather than having to open the settings and tap "reset."

Excellent

Would be great to have option to set number of rings, I prefer 3 bells start and stop.

Almost there

I agree that this app seems a perfect match for iPhone owning meditators. I also agree that this app is a bit limited if you have auto-lock set on your phone - the phone locks and the alarm will not wake the phone. Im not sure if the SDK gives the developer access to wake the device, but if it does it would be nice - saves energy by shutting off the screen yet still is functional. Having the screen off is also nice as it prevents "peeking" at the time for those whose concentration might be wandering. All said this could soon be a 5 star app and would be used twice daily by many users.

Mostly looks, little substance

This app is stylish and feels solid, well-written, but it doesnt really offer any significant functionality over the built-in timer in the Clock app. It feels like the developers focused on slick aesthetics over usability. For a meditation timer, I want a wide selection of sounds, various bells and bowls, and very customizable ring times. "Ring three times in 30 seconds, then once after ten minutes, then once 30 minutes later, then three more times 40 minutes later." I want all the options exposed easily in a nice, usable UI. Meditation timer offers basically none of that. You can set a preparation time, after which it rings once, and then rings once more after your set meditation time. There is only one sound. Also, while this is subjective, I found the sound harsh, and it ended far too soon; I like listening to the tail of the singing bowl noise. In this app, it rings for a few seconds and then cuts out. You can do essentially all of this with the built-in clock timer, except the preparation period, but its not that hard to just get set up and then lean out and hit Start. Furthermore, the UI for this app goes for looks over functionality. When you launch it, you get the very attractive timer screen. But theres no functionality on it. You need to double-tap to get to settings. In fact, you always need to double-tap every time you launch the app because the timer doesnt auto-restart, so when you launch its at 00:00. In Settings theres a Restart button which you always have to hit. Theres no reason to have the pleasant purple or green timer screen at all, though, unless you meditate while staring at your phone. I meditate with my eyes closed, or barely open, or else looking at the ground while I walk. Having the timer screen at all is just a nuisance, since it means you have to double-tap to go to Settings all the time to do anything. Im disappointed in this application: I dont mean to be mean, but I cant understand what the developers were thinking. It offers so little functionality beyond the built in Clock timer, and exposes it in an obfuscated way... it just feels like they wanted to make something that looked nice, but didnt really think about how meditators might want to use it.

almost perfect

i love this app, and i use it daily for my own meditation sessions, and once a week for our meditation group. the large numbers are great, as is the "preparation" countdown, which i find so very helpful. my only suggestion for it would be to offer a variety of gong sounds to choose from (i find the default one a bit "brassy" for my tastes), or maybe even let us choose our own sound from our ringtone list. just a thought. thank you for this app!

Very elegant and simple!

Very nice clean and simple app for meditators. Interface is well designed. Feature request: Id like to be able to add a dedication screen that I could have come up at when the timer ends. Maybe in the preferences allow me to type in the text of the dedication prayer.

Great app, but the sound stopped working

I love this app! Its the gong that sold me on it. But recently the sound stopped working. Ive reinstalled it, tried tweaking the settings but Im still not getting any sound. Any ideas? Im running it on my iPod Touch. thx

Simple Timer

This simple timer would be much more helpful if you could stop and restart.

Does enough for me!

I use that application everyday day for my meditation exercises. The preparation time feature is very useful and this application never crashed. Ive been using it for over a year now on a daily basis. Love the gong sound too!

Nice. Have request

I found this app to be very useful. I request a volume control within the app for the gong. I dont like having to turn my whole phones volume down and found the gong startling. Otherwise, nicely done.

the way it is

It works well.

Not reliable

A cute little app that worked for a few days. But the gong stopped sounding, and I dont know why. So it quickly became useless.

fail

Emulating something as simple as a timer has to have the simple functionality of pausing the count. Life has interruptions-- hello? Pretty colors, and some features which would be nice were they not trivialized by whats lacking. quickly deleted.

Fair -- but no pause button, reset take too long

Sometimes I need to pause the timer -- somwtimes I want to "Tap" to start. It could be elegant instead of fair. so close and yet so far.

Piece of crap

Worthless piece of crap.

Worthless

I might as well have staid with te timer provided with the phones clock. At the very least I expected an array of chimes, tones, sounds. Dont waste your money.

Mediocre

There is no cancel or pause button. If you start a session and quit the app before it ends, the timer will continue to run and you will hear the chime next time you start the app. No choice of chimes.

Re: problems

We hope customers writing negative opinions will act in good faith and revisit their reviews to reflect the changes in current updates. Almost all negative reviews are related to some iPhones going to sleep, an issue which was fixed long ago (in version 1.0.1, made available around September 8th). We apologize on behalf of Apple for taking so long releasing the update, which was completed some two weeks before it appeared on the App Store. If users are still seeing issues, we have a support email set up to give us quick feedback. (Reviews sometimes take more than a day to get posted.) Lograh: Your inflammatory remarks does unfortunately not show much understanding of the iPhone platform. As 3d-party developers, we are not allowed to physically lower the brightness of the display unless we let the iPhone go to sleep, which, as you so kindly remind us, halts Meditation Timer so it wont ring when the time is out. One thing we could do is "fake" lowering the brightness by darkening the image we display, but that would do little to improve battery life since the light output would be constant. (If you come up with a technical solution for this issue, by all means let us know.) However, dimming the screen would probably help alleviate "screen burn-in" fears, which is why were planning on adding something like this if theres user demand for it. The next version (1.0.2, submitted a week ago) will add an option to disable vibration on the iPhone. (I am the developer of Meditation Timer, and thus set a neutral rating of three stars.)

Good for single sitting, bad for repetition.

This is a fine app if youre looking for a simple starting and stopping bell over a fixed time period, plus a small optional preparation period (like 30 seconds to get into position -- you can adjust the time before the first "start" bell rings). I appreciate the clean and simple interface, not full of bells and whistles (both figuratively and literally, since theres one count-em one chime which sounds great). If comes up short if you want intervals or repetition. Theres a "Repeat" option that sets the timer to restart…and restart, and restart, and restart, never stopping until you go back to the settings and turn it off. (Exiting the app *postpones* the restart -- the app will chime immediately when you return to it.) Makes me wonder if they ever actually tried to *use* this feature. A setting to let you set the number of restarts would turn this from a face-plant into a winner.

Found a different description saying it will NOT work with 4.2.1

Still no apparent support at developers page. Can I get my $0.99 back? I found this listed as working with 4.2.1, but Ive now found another page saying it wont.
